| Fiamma Fumana, from Northern Italy, make a music that draws from traditional
roots, but with a style, sound, and attitude that is thoroughly contemporary.
Fiamma is Italian for "flame" = the energy of the present. Fumana means "fog" or "mist" = the mysterious resilience of the past.
Their latest release is called ONDA (©2006 Omnium Records), produced by
Peter Walsh, who has worked with everyone from Simple Minds to Peter
Gabriel. With powerful female vocals front and center, the piva emiliana
bagpipes and accordion, and the rhythms of dance music beneath, "Fiamma
Fumana keeps its age-old soul rather modern," says Global Rhythm magazine.
FF began as a studio project, releasing two albums on Omnium (1.0 and
Home), and in the process evolving into an effective five-member live act:
Roberta Carrieri (vocals); Alberto Cottica (accordion, guitar, piano); Jessica
Lombardi (Piva Emiliana bagpipes, flute, bodhran); Claudia Ferrari, aka Missy J (electronics,
DJ); and Paolo Perego (drums). In 2003, the group signed with SRO Artists, Inc. for
their North American touring.
Fiamma Fumana is also available in North America with Mondine di Novi (the
Novi Rice Weeders Choir) in a special concert program entitled Di Madre in Figlia (From Mother
to Daughter).
