RED=LUCK the new record
Patty Larkin has turned her 10th album, RED=LUCK into
a compelling tour-de-force of tightly woven songs. Kaleidoscopic
colors reflect her signature sounds- the "slapsteel" (lapsteel as
played by percussionist Ben Wittman), "Gideonics" (cello as conceived
by Gideon Freudmann), Middle Eastern bazouki, Celtic strains, R&B
flirtations. What makes RED=LUCK a standout is that the whole is
greater than the sum of its parts. This collection of short stories
and soundscapes has a vibe about it -mixed by Mike Denneen (Aimee
Mann & Jen Trynin)- and the feel of the familiar. With RED=LUCK
Larkin has created an intimate portrait of artist in full stride.
A follow-up to her critically
acclaimed Regrooving The Dream (Top 10 New York Times)
and Perishable Fruit (Top 10 Wall Street Journal),
Larkin's RED was recorded in her home studio on the tip of Cape
Cod. Once again Larkin donned the cap of multi-instrumentalist,
conjuring up sounds on electric and acoustic guitars, (slide, 12-string,
baritone and six string), bazouki, accordion, lapsteel and piano.
Calling on the support of friends, Larkin invited guest vocalists-
Jonatha Brooke, Willy Porter, Merrie Amsterberg and Jennifer Kimball.
Back-up musicians included drummer Ben Wittman, bassists Richard
Gates (Paula Cole) and Mike Rivard, guitarists Duke Levine (Mary
Chapin Carpenter), Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega & Jewel), Australian
wizard Jeff Lang, and nephew John Hickey. Seamus Egan, Mick McCauley
and Winifred Horan of Solas added their Celtic traditions. RED=LUCK
was produced with long-time collaborators Ben Wittman (The Story,
Laurie Anderson) and Bette Warner (Larkin's Perishable Fruit, Regrooving
the Dream and à gogo).

FILMS AND COVERS
Larkin's work continues to gain prevalence in films. In 2002, Larkin's
breathtaking instrumental, "Handful of Water" appeared in The
First Twenty Million, a Twentieth Century Fox production. This
was Larkin's fifth song to appear in film. Larkin's title cut from
Regrooving the Dream was featured - as the end title
- in Ivan Reitman's Evolution (DreamWorks) starring Julianne
Moore and David Duchovny. Additional credits include two Sydney
Pollack films - Random Hearts (Columbia Pictures, starring
Harrison Ford and Kristen Scott Thomas) which used Larkin's oft-requested
"Good Thing" (Angels Running) as end title, and Sliding
Doors, the Miramax film starring Gwyneth Paltrow and featuring
"Coming Up For Air" (Perishable Fruit) and "Tenderness
on the Block" (Zevon/Brown).
Recent covers include:
"I Told Him That My Dog Wouldn't Run" by modern-day chanteuse Holly
Cole and "Good Thing (Angels Running)" by the diva
herself - Cher.
